The North Isles local derby saw Unst claim all 3 points in an entertaining and well contested match at Baltasound.

Both teams were prepared for a tough match following the physical encounter in Mid Yell at the start of the season, though this game was dominated by the pace and work rate of Erik Thomson up front for Unst. Although there were only a handful of chances early on, the Yell defence were caught out on each occasion by long balls over the top or round the back which Thomson latched onto and dispatched clinically.

The first goal came from a long ball by Ben Johnson; Thomson able to out run the Yell defence and coolly slot home in the far corner of the net. The second was almost identical, the knock on this time coming from a header in midfield which dropped behind the Yell defence. Thomson again being left one-on-one with the keeper and placing the ball through the keepers legs.

Unst were 4 up within 33 minutes when a whipped ball into the box was lashed into the back of the net by Darren Thomson and a surging run down the right flank was rifled into the bottom corner by Jordan Johnson. Yell's problems went from bad to worse when Mark Oddie was sent off for fouling another Erik Thomson run forward. With Oddie being the last defender the referee had no choice but to send him packing and it looked like the game was over for the away side.

To Yell's credit, they never capitulated in the second half and had a few chances of their own. Lee Jamieson was the target man up front for Yell and scored Yell's only goal on 55 minutes. A route one clearance from the Yell keeper saw Jamieson and Unst keeper Derek Duncan challenge on the edge of the area only for Jamieson to head the ball over the keeper and into the net.

This goal gave Yell a confidence boost though Unst still looked dangerous on the break. Jordan Johnson and Iain Johnson were making good use of the flanks and several balls were whipped into the box. It was Thomson though who turned provider and setup younger brother David on the edge of the area who smashed the ball goalwards for it to strike the bar, the line and then out to safety. Unst scored their fifth and final goal on 75 minutes when Erik Thomson again broke free down the right and from what looked like an impossible angle, he thundered the ball into the corner of the net to complete his hat-trick.

Stand out performers for Unst were Erik Thomson, Jordan Johnson and Ben Johnson. For Yell, Danny Peterson at the back won all the aerial battles and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet.
